Relative clauses

Defining relative clauses contain essential information which identifies the person or thing being talked about.

The woman who / that is wearing a red dress works as a teacher.
The pencil case which / that is on the desk belongs to one of my students.

The man who(m) / that / - I was talking to lives next door.
The man to whom I was talking lives next door (more formal).
She knows the man whose son has been arrested this week.

Non-defining relative clauses give extra information about a person or a thing which is already identified.

Helen, who is wearing a red dress, works as a teacher.
The pencil case, which is on the table, belongs to one of my students.
Peter, who(m) I was talking to yesterday, lives next door.
